Lisa Lepore: "On Reading" Featured in AU Common Thread

Los Angeles Library Director, Lisa Lepore, contributed this thought-provoking essay "On Reading" to The Common Thread, AU's newsletter for faculty and staff.

There’s a ton of research which says reading sharpens our minds to help us understand complex structures, develops sophisticated conceptual connections, expands our use and facility with language, introduces diverse thinking that strengthens our own, improves writing, and, when we deep
read, moves us into a heightened state of existence. Reading affirms the importance of community and can introduce us to brave and outspoken people we would never otherwise encounter, those who
surprise us, undo us, and restore us. As James Baldwin says: “You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read.” Let’s get students to read more, inside and outside of their disciplines, and across genres.

OCLC Member Stories: Antioch University Library

Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) Member Stories recently featured Antioch University Library. AU’s library, which supports approximately 5,000 students, faculty, and staff members across all campuses and through online programs, first migrated the five separate campus systems to a cloud-based management system in 2013. The consolidated library offers more resources and provides students with access to all of the AU library locations, as well as extensive online collections.

Mobile Monday: Birds of North America Online

Although it's not specifically optimized for mobile use, one of the most comprehensive birding guides, The Birds of North America, is available for Antioch U library users -- anywhere you have internet access. Covering birds from the USA (including Hawaii) and Canada, this collection provides comprehensive life histories and multimedia files for over 715 species.

The Birds of North America is frequently updated by members of the American Ornithologists' Union.

If you want to try some other online birding resources, Audubon reviewed some apps and online field guides this summer.

Like most of the plant identification apps, the apps that are designed to help you identify birds by photos, location, and your recordings of their songs are still developing. Active identification still needs a lot of improvement! Apps like Birdsnap and Chirp! BirdSong USA are getting better all the time, though, especially with more user interaction and notes and ideas for developers.

Online field guides might add to your birding adventures, so check some out before your next excursion.
